Torrington 1646 offers one of the most immersive Civil War experiences in the country, with guides in period costume bringing the events of the 1646 Battle of Torrington vividly to life. Children in particular tend to love the opportunity to try on armour in the Royalist encampment. Barnstaple, the largest town in North Devon, has a good range of independent shops, a covered Victorian market and the excellent Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon for a rainy afternoon.
