Herefordshire

Herefordshire is one of England's most quietly rewarding counties for a log cabin holiday. Tucked between the Welsh borders and the Cotswolds, it's a place of rolling orchards, ancient market towns and wide open countryside that most visitors simply drive past on the way somewhere else, which is exactly what makes it so good.

The county is famous for its cider country, and rightly so. Hereford city is compact and genuinely charming, with a cathedral that houses the Mappa Mundi — one of the most extraordinary medieval maps in existence. Beyond the city, the villages of the Golden Valley, the spa town of Builth Wells just over the border, and the book town of Hay-on-Wye all make excellent day trips from a cabin base.

For walkers, the Malvern Hills form the eastern edge of the county and offer ridge walks with views stretching from the Brecon Beacons to the Cotswolds. The Wye Valley — shared with Monmouthshire — is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is brilliant for both walking and canoeing.
