The Yorkshire Dales and the Surrounding Area
The location of Lindale Park Yorkshire Dales lodges is exceptional for exploring the very best of this outstanding national park. Some of England’s most spectacular walking trails begin directly from the park gates, with routes to suit every level of ability and ambition. The historic market towns of Richmond, Bedale, Leyburn and Masham are all within five miles, each offering their own character, independent shops and excellent places to eat and drink.
Bolton Castle is very close by and is not to be missed. This impressive medieval fortress with its distinctive rectangular towers and beautiful panoramic views over the Dales has been standing since the 14th century and remains one of the finest castles in the north of England. Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for a period, and the castle’s history is brought to life through excellent guided tours and interactive displays that appeal to visitors of all ages.
Kilnsey Park is a beautiful large parkland where wildlife roams freely and the Kilnsey Trail provides a wonderful circular walk packed with activities to keep children entertained throughout. Bolton on Swale Lake is a stunning and tranquil birdwatching destination, with shovelers, merlins, oystercatchers, curlew sandpipers and yellow wagtails among the species regularly spotted by patient observers on the lakeside.
The Bowes Museum at Barnard Castle is one of the great surprises of the north of England — a spectacular French chateau style building housing an outstanding collection of European fine and decorative arts, set in beautiful formal gardens. It makes an excellent full day out for families and art enthusiasts alike. Golf enthusiasts should head to Barnard Castle Golf Club, an excellent 18 hole course with gorgeous views across the surrounding countryside. For fishing, Ellerton Park is a superb local destination for coarse fishing, particularly local carp, in a beautifully peaceful rural setting.
